Paris is Always a Good Idea

I had less than a week between turning in my dissertation and beginning my new job in Morocco. Since I was already flying through France on my way to Casablanca, I decided to extend my layover and spend a weekend in Paris. After all, Paris is always a good idea.

I landed in the late afternoon on Friday. Exhausted after packing up my flat the day before and dragging everything I owned across the city to my little Airbnb, I only managed an evening walk around the neighborhood the first night. But in Paris, even the outskirts of the city are stunning.

Shakespeare and Company is always my first stop in Paris. The bookstore is full of nooks and overstuffed couches, cats and old posters. While tourists flock to the outside to take pictures of the iconic storefront, the bookstore is often quiet, full of readers. The cafe next door is my favorite place for a morning coffee with a view of Notre Dame.

Another reason I wanted to go to Paris was to take advantage of my European residency and free access to museums. On my last trip to Paris, I visited most of the classic Parisian sites, so on this trip I returned to my favorite spots, taking my time. The Musée de l'Orangerie, built to hold Monet's Water Lilies paintings, is the perfect place to journal and people watch.

When I turned on my phone after landing in Paris I got a text from a dear family friend telling me their entire family was also in Paris for the weekend. This international life never ceases to surprise me. If you have children, the Jardin d'Acclimatation amusement park is perfect mix of modern rides with a classic carnival atmosphere. People are saying it is even better than Paris Disneyland! Picnics in the park, roller coasters, donkey rides, and hugs from my favorite little people made for the best Saturday afternoon. Until next time friends!

Taking advantage of my museum access, I braved a walk up the Arc de Triomphe in 38 degree weather. The sweat was worth it for the view.

As a Beyoncé fan, you know I had to go to the Louvre to relive ApeSh*t. And to see art, of course. I have mixed feelings about the Louvre. On one hand, it is one of the most impressive art collections in the world. But on the other, I find the crowds and sheer size of the museum overwhelming. It didn't help that is was over 40 degrees. If only I had the money to rent it out for day...

After a quick glimpse of the Mona Lisa, I made my way to the Rodin Museum. Last time I was in Paris I spent an afternoon in the sculpture gardens and remember it as one of the most peaceful moments of my life. I decided to repeat the tradition and spent the rest of my Sunday finishing a book on a bench beside the museum. I am so thankful for this little weekend in Paris.
