What is a poetry collection?
A poetry collection is between 30-100 different poems with a theme. Full-length poetry manuscripts ought to be 60-110 pages of poetry (about 100 pages is very common). A "collection" differs in definition from volumes of a poet's "collected poems", "selected poems" or from a poetry anthology.
How do I create cohesion or a theme?
A successful poetry collection is cohesive. A theme does not mean each poem needs to be about one topic, but the book as a whole needs to have a definable “purpose” or “theme” or “feel.” Think of it as the vision of this collection.

What is a chapbook / pamphlet?
A chapbook is a short (10–30 poems) collection of poems with a unifying principle, theme, question, or experience. It is generally 20 pages of poetry, not including front matter etc.
What is the difference between a chapbook and a pamphlet?
It’s simply that Americans prefer the word ‘chapbook’ and while in the UK it is referred to as a ‘pamphlet’.
How do I select poems for my chapbook/pamphlet
Selecting poetry for a chapbook very often focuses on theme. Generally, poets write many more than 10-30 poems, and then pare it down the best ones.
Why publish a chapbook/pamphlet?
Most poets write/publish one or more chapbooks/pamphlets before they write/publish a full collection. This provides experience in write and publication, as well as audience growth. Additionally, when you query a full collection, publishers may ask if you have written/published chapbooks before.

poetry micro chapbook / zine edit
What is a micro-chapbook / zine?
Poetry micro-chapbooks or zines are usually 10 pages or less. For the most part, they are not produced/published like books (ie. with a real binding), but instead handmade or a DIY zine-type production. Often sold at zine-fairs, pop-ups, or local shops and bookstores.
Why write or produce a micro-chapbook or zine?
Poets and publishers have embraced this smaller stature—both in terms of size and audience—by turning them into physical art objects in limited editions. They can be handmade or DIY'ed and easily sold! They quick to write and produce. They are a great start for new writers!
